Resurrection: The Evidence

Resurrection: The Evidence

On Sunday VOX City Church launched it’s public worship gatherings. I preached on how the resurrection of Jesus Christ is the crux of the “Gospel That Changes Everything”. The text for the evening was 1 Corinthians 15:1-11 where Paul gives two pieces of evidence for the resurrection. First, Paul says that the resurrection is in line with what the Bible teaches ( 1 Cor. 15:3-4). The Old Testament prophesied that the messiah would die and be raised again (Isaiah 53, Psalm 22, Jonah 1:17, Hosea 6:2, Psalm 16:10). Jesus himself said that he must die, but would rise again(Matt. 12:40, Luke 24:46, Matt. 17: 22-23, Mark 8:31). Second, Paul gives a list of people that Jesus appeared to after his resurrection(1 Cor. 15: 5-7), including himself(v. 8).

I wanted to do a couple blog posts this week for those that would like some additional resources/evidence of the resurrection, so here is the first one.

Michael Patton has done a good set of posts giving some additional evidence. He categorizes his evidence as internal and external.

1. Internal Evidence: Evidence coming from within the primary witness documents, the New Testament.

Internal Evidence:

* Honesty
* Irrelevant Details
* Harmony
* Public Extraordinary Claims
* Lack of Motivation for Fabrication

2. External Evidence: Collaborative evidence coming from outside the primary witness documents.

External Evidence:

* Preservation of the Documents
* Archeology
* Extra-biblical Attestation
* Survival in a Hostile Environment
